 Utena County encompasses a greater part of North - Eastern Aukstaitija ethnographic region, and is the second important tourism region in Lithuania (seaside region being the first one), boasting scenic landscapes, bountiful in cultural and historical monuments. One of the main tourist attractions is the Aukstaitija National Park, established in 1974. The park encompasses parts of Ignalina, Utena, and Svencionys districts. Its territory is 406 km2. Forest covers 69 % of the territory, water - 16 % : there are 126 lakes, 47 rivers and brooks. There are plenty of fish in the lakes and lots of mushrooms, berries and wild animals in the forests. Tourism and Recreation Centre in Aukstaitija National Park, located in Paluse, offers one or more days tours on foot, by boat or a canoe. Car drivers can choose between a short and a long route through the Park. There are 6 water-mills in the Park, most of them reconstructed and accommodated for a romantic stay. 18 camping grounds have been erected on picturesque lake shores. The only historical Bee-keeping Museum in Lithuania is open in Stripeikiai. Botanical Path introduces rare and protected plants. There is a new exposition of a stone age dwelling and a grave mound. |
